Job Description

Our client is an international solar solutions company focused on Utility scale Wheeling & Commercial and Industrial Businesses from 1,2MW and up.

This role reports into the Head of Project Management, and is a permanent role based in JHB with travel to various sites around the country as and when required.

You will oversee the planning and execution of projects. (both wheeling and C&I)

You will manage multiple facets of project delivery from initiation through to completion, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget while meeting the required standards.

You will be the key contact for everything involving a project’s organization and timeline, managing project deliverables and contractor relations, and establishing and monitoring metrics such as HSE, project schedules, and cost performance, in accordance with company systems and practices.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years in a managerial role in construction/EPC projects.
  • Awareness of cultural differences and varying legal/regulatory environments.
  • Experience of working in a multinational, multi-segment, environment with matrix reporting.
  • Experience in Wheeling Projects and Utility Approval Processes (nice to have)
  • Experience in C&I Energy Projects above 1.2MW.

Key Result Area 1: Support the project initiation phase

General:

  • Support the Business Development (BD) team during commercial negotiations, particularly in addressing construction queries and clarifications from clients.
  • Get quotations for Investment Committee (IC) approved projects; review, negotiate, and finalize Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts with the most favorable terms for YDE.
  • Assist BD and Legal teams in the negotiation of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA)/lease agreements.
  • Develop project scopes and objectives involving all relevant stakeholders, ensuring technical feasibility and risk management.
  • Ensure resource availability and allocation; establish and maintain relationships with third parties, vendors, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Evaluate potential subcontractors and assist in project financial controlling through cashflow provisions to relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Engage with the Technical Team to revise electrical, mechanical, and civil quality plans, inspection test procedures, and conduct on-site inspections for contractors.
  • Ensure compliance with South African regulations and develop detailed project plans to track progress.
  • Perform risk management assessments related to construction to minimize project risks and follow up on necessary regulatory licenses from relevant authorities.

Wheeling Projects:

  • Lead the initiation of wheeling projects, ensuring a deep understanding of the wheeling agreements, utility approvals, and the necessary interactions with government entities and utilities.
  • Navigate the complexities of wheeling, including managing the interface between multiple stakeholders and aligning project objectives with the legal and regulatory framework specific to wheeling.

C&I Projects:

  • Manage the initiation of C&I projects, focusing on optimizing the internal resources, energy independence, and cost savings for clients.
  • Ensure C&I projects are designed to meet client-specific energy needs, integrating renewable energy solutions seamlessly into their existing infrastructure.

Key Result Area 2: Implement the project

General:

  • Execute EPC contracts, coordinating internal resources and third parties/vendors for flawless project execution within scope, on time, and within budget.
  • Use appropriate verification techniques to manage changes in project scope, schedule, and costs.
  • Measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools, and techniques.
  • Work closely with the Technical Team on revising electrical, mechanical, and civil quality plans; assist in design and structural calculations.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation; facilitate the HSE department in ensuring compliance on all sites and in the workplace.
  • Review and ensure appropriate progress and HSE reporting from EPC contractors.

Wheeling Projects:

  • Implement wheeling projects by coordinating with utility companies and ensuring all grid integration requirements are met.
  • Monitor the progress of wheeling projects, ensuring alignment with the approved regulatory framework and utility requirements.

C&I Projects:

  • Drive the implementation of C&I projects with a focus on delivering high-efficiency, low-cost energy solutions that meet client expectations.
  • Ensure all internal and external resources are effectively utilized, and project objectives are met without compromising on quality or performance.

Key Result Area 3: Close the project

General:

  • Oversee the commissioning of projects and obtain commissioning packages as per YDE standards from EPC contractors.
  • Finalize construction projects and hand them over to the Asset Management and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) departments on time.
  • Monitor and assess customer satisfaction to ensure the successful closure of projects and identification of areas for improvement.

Wheeling Projects:

  • Facilitate the transition of wheeling projects into the operational phase, ensuring all contractual obligations are met and the project is integrated seamlessly with the national grid.

C&I Projects:

Ensure C&I projects are fully operational upon handover, with all systems functioning as intended and delivering the expected energy outputs.
